Getting Started
My child has never skated before. Is that okay?
Absolutely! Our beginner programs are designed for children with little or no skating experience. Our certified Skate Canada coaches provide a fun, supportive environment where every skater learns at their own pace.
How do I know which program is right for my child?
Programs are based on your child's age and skating experience.
-
Pre CanSkate – Ages 3–9 who are new to skating.
-
CanSkate – Ages 5+ learning basic skating skills.
-
CanSkate Plus – Skaters who have successfully completed Stage 3.
-
STARSkate – Figure skating program for eligible skaters.
-
Teen & Adult Learn to Skate – Beginner to experienced adult skaters.
If you're unsure, contact us and we'll be happy to help.
My child has only skated a few times at public skating. Which program should they join?
If your child is still learning to balance and move independently on the ice, they'll likely fit into one of our beginner programs.
-
Ages 3–9 and never skated before or needs assistance to get up, stand or WALK on the ice = Pre CanSkate
-
Ages 3+ and can walk or glide without assistance and can get to standing on own = CanSkate
How old does my child have to be?
Children should be at least 3 years old to register in Pre CanSkate or CanSkate. We find this age, for most, a good time for the skaters to be able to leave their parent/caregiver on the other side of the boards and listen to instructions from our coaches. We have definitely had younger skaters on the ice and have had no trouble. The opposite is also true, that we have had older skaters on the ice that were not ready. The most important thing is that the skater has a positive experience with us.
My child is nervous. What if they don't want to go on the ice?
This is very common! Our coaches are experienced in helping new skaters feel comfortable and confident. We encourage parents to stay positive and give children time to adjust, most settle in quickly after a few lessons.

STARSkate
How do I join STARSkate?
Skaters must complete CanSkate Stage 6 (or equivalent) and receive approval from the coaching team.
Are private lessons required?
No. Private lessons are optional, especially at the Junior STAR level. Group lessons are included with STARSkate, and families can decide if and when private lessons are right for their skater.
How do I choose a coach?
Visit our How to Choose a Coach page for information and helpful tips.
How do assessments (tests) work?
Assessment opportunities are offered throughout the season. Visit our Test Days page for dates and registration information.
Can my child compete?
Yes! Competition is optional. Many STARSkate skaters choose to compete, while others skate for personal achievement and recreation.
Adult & Teen CanSkate
Do I need any previous skating experience?
Not at all! This program is designed for both complete beginners and those returning to skating after many years. Our coaches will help you progress at a pace that is comfortable for you.
Am I too old to learn to skate?
Absolutely not! Skating is a lifelong sport, and it's never too late to learn. Whether you're 13 or 73, our coaches create a welcoming and supportive environment for all participants.
Will I be the only beginner?
Definitely not. Many participants join with little or no skating experience. Everyone starts somewhere, and our coaches ensure that skaters feel comfortable and supported throughout the learning process.
What should I wear?
Dress warmly in comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.
We recommend:
Warm jacket
Athletic pants or snow pants
Gloves or mittens
Thin socks
CSA-approved hockey helmet (if required)
Avoid bulky clothing that may restrict movement.
Do I need figure skates?
No. Beginners may wear either figure skates or hockey skates, as long as they fit properly and are in good condition.
Do my skates need to be sharpened?
Yes. New skates often require sharpening before their first use. Properly sharpened skates make it much easier to balance and learn new skills.
Do I have to wear a helmet?
A CSA-approved hockey helmet is required for skaters working on CanSkate Stage 4 and below.
Even if you're not required to wear one, many adults choose to wear a helmet while learning because it adds confidence and protection.
What if I fall?
Falling is a normal part of learning to skate! Our coaches will teach you safe ways to fall and get back up. As your balance and confidence improve, falls become much less frequent.
Can I take private lessons?
Yes! Private lessons are available for anyone who would like additional one-on-one instruction. However, they are completely optional and are not required to participate in the program. These are set up by you. You will need to contact a coach to arrange. See our coaches page for more information and contact details.
Can I register with a friend or family member?
Absolutely! Many participants enjoy learning alongside a spouse, friend, sibling, or child. Skating together can make the experience even more enjoyable.
Can I continue skating after I complete the program?
Yes! Once you've developed your basic skating skills, there are many opportunities to continue skating recreationally or explore other disciplines, including figure skating, hockey, ringette, and recreational ice sports.
What if I miss a class?
We do not offer another Adult & Teen CanSkate during the week. Therefore, we are unable to offer make-up classes for this program.
I'm nervous about joining. Is that normal?
Absolutely! Many adults and teens feel a little nervous before their first lesson, especially if they've never skated before. Our coaches are experienced in working with beginners and create a friendly, encouraging environment where everyone learns at their own pace. The goal is to have fun, build confidence, and enjoy being on the ice.
